How we work

Office First.

We believe the best version of Twine gets built when we're in the same room. This is how we work, and why.

Same room. Same mission.

Why

Why we're in the same room

Great software isn't just written โ€” it's shaped through constant conversation.

01

Conversations shape software

The quick question across a desk, the sketch on a whiteboard, the moment someone says "actually, wait" before a bad decision goes out the door. These happen naturally when people are together.

02

Speed in the AI era

AI is changing what our competitors can ship and how fast. The teams that stay ahead are the ones with the least friction between an idea and its execution. Being together is a big part of that.

03

Gozo is our advantage

We live and work on one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Mediterranean. What Apple and Meta spend millions engineering โ€” proximity โ€” we already have, naturally.

This isn't a new idea. Steve Jobs built his entire philosophy around it โ€” he believed creativity comes from spontaneous meetings and random collisions between people, not from structured agendas. Adam Mosseri echoed the same thinking when he moved Instagram to full in-office working: teams are simply more creative and collaborative when they're in the same place.

We're also at a point in the market where speed matters more than ever. AI is changing what our competitors can ship and how fast. The teams that stay ahead are the ones with the least friction between an idea and its execution.

Our clients feel it too. When something breaks during a busy service โ€” a printer stops, a card terminal drops off, a kitchen display freezes โ€” the fix usually involves more than one person: the engineer who knows the code, whoever's on the call, someone with context on that specific deployment. In the same room, that conversation happens in seconds. Over Slack, it's a thread. The customer feels the difference.

And here's what makes our situation different: we're all already here. We live and work on one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Mediterranean. The commute most of our team makes to Xewkija is shorter than what the average Londoner walks to the Tube. Companies like Apple and Meta spend millions engineering the conditions for proximity. We have it naturally. It would be a waste not to use it.

Rituals

How we work together

Proximity creates the conditions for a great team. These rituals are how we use it.

Every Wednesday

Walking Retro

Wednesday afternoons we step away from the office as a team and ask three questions: what's going well, what isn't, and what do we do differently. No laptops, no phones. Most weeks it's a walk. Some weeks it ends at a seaside bar.

Every Friday

Fix It Fridays

No new features, no roadmap work. Everyone โ€” across every role โ€” spends the day fixing something that's been annoying them. A bug that keeps coming back. A process that doesn't make sense. Small improvements, shipped.

Every Month

On-site Offsite

Once a month we spend a half-day at a restaurant or retail shop running Twine. We eat, we talk, and we see the product in the real environment it was built for. There's no agenda โ€” the conversation finds its own level.

Principles

What we believe

Twelve short ideas we keep coming back to.

Simplicity

Keep it simple.
Complexity is easy. Simplicity takes discipline. When in doubt, remove rather than add. The best solution is almost always the one that does less and does it well.
One less tap.
Every interaction in our product should require one fewer step than expected. We measure the quality of our UX in friction removed. If a user has to think, we haven't done our job.
Simple scales. Complex fails.
Simple systems grow. Complex ones collapse under their own weight. When something breaks โ€” in code, in process, in communication โ€” it's usually because someone added too much.

Reliability

The till never sleeps.
Our product runs 24/7 in live restaurant and retail environments. Downtime is not an inconvenience โ€” it is a business crisis for the people who depend on us. We treat it accordingly.
Serve the server.
The person using Twine at 9pm on a busy Saturday service is our most important user. Not the demo. Not the investor deck. The person on shift, under pressure, who needs it to just work.

Accountability

Own the outcome.
We don't hand off problems. If something is in your hands, it is your responsibility until it is resolved โ€” not until it is passed on.
If you see it, own it.
You don't need permission to fix something that's broken. Seeing a problem and walking past it is not an option here. Ownership is not a job title โ€” it's a habit.
Honest over comfortable.
We say the harder thing when it needs to be said. Comfortable conversations are easy. Honest ones move things forward. We choose the latter.

Velocity & Culture

Release. Learn. Repeat.
We ship, we observe, we adjust. Waiting for perfect is waiting forever. A good thing in front of a real user today teaches us more than a perfect thing that ships in six months.
Embrace the chaos.
We work in hospitality and retail โ€” environments that are loud, fast, and unpredictable by nature. We don't fight that. We build for it, and we thrive in it.
