Connecting Your Global Payments Terminal to Twine POS
Drive your Global Payments card terminal straight from Twine POS — sale totals are sent to the terminal automatically, so there's no manual keying and nothing to mismatch at end of day.
Unlike a cloud integration, Twine talks to the terminal directly over your local network. That means both the terminal and your Twine tills have to be on the same network, and the terminal has to be switched into ECR mode so it accepts sales from an external system.
Time: ~15 minutes, plus a phone call to Global Payments · You'll need: physical access to your terminal and your Global Payments account details.
Before you start
- A Global Payments card terminal, powered on and connected to your network (wired or WiFi).
- Your Twine POS tills on the same local network as the terminal.
- Your Global Payments account details to hand — they'll verify you on the call.
- Admin access to Twine POS, or your Twine onboarding contact.
Step 1 · Ask Global Payments to enable ECR mode
Out of the box the terminal runs standalone. To let Twine send sales to it, Global Payments has to switch it into ECR mode (integrated, or "Electronic Cash Register", mode). You can't turn this on yourself.
- Call Global Payments support — the number is on your merchant agreement or terminal paperwork.
- Tell them you want your terminal put into ECR / integration mode so you can connect it to your POS (Twine POS).
- They'll enable it on their side. The terminal needs to be online, and they may push an update or ask you to restart it.
Step 2 · Get the ECR ID from the terminal
Once ECR mode is on, the terminal has an ECR ID — the identifier Twine uses to talk to it. Read this value from the terminal and write it down.
Step 3 · Find the terminal's IP address and port
Because Twine connects across your network, it needs to know where the terminal lives:
- IP address — found in the terminal's network settings.
- Port — usually 2050. Confirm it with Global Payments if you're unsure.
Step 4 · Hand the details to Twine
Give your Twine onboarding or support contact:
- The ECR ID from Step 2.
- The terminal's IP address and port from Step 3.
- The currency you take payments in (for example, EUR).
Twine configures these against your account and switches on the Global Payments payment method on your tills. Twine supplies its own system identity (the ECR name and software version) — that's on our side, so you don't need to provide it. Because these settings live on your Twine account rather than the till, your devices pick them up automatically the next time they sync.
How it works at the till
Once you're connected, taking a card payment is automatic:
- Ring up the sale in Twine POS and choose Global Payments as the payment method.
- Twine sends the amount to the terminal over your network.
- The customer taps, inserts, or swipes their card on the terminal.
- The result comes straight back to Twine — the order is marked paid and the receipt prints.
Terminal actions from Twine
Twine can also drive a few terminal operations directly, under Settings → Hardware → Payment Terminal:
- Reverse Last Transaction — undo the last successful payment.
- Repeat Last Message — recover the result after a dropped connection.
- Close Totals — run the end-of-day batch settlement.
Troubleshooting
Twine can't reach the terminal
- Confirm the terminal and the till are on the same network — not guest WiFi or a separate VLAN.
- Check the terminal's IP address hasn't changed; reserve a static IP (Step 3).
- Confirm the port is correct (usually 2050).
- Make sure the terminal is powered on and idle, not part-way through a payment on its own screen.
Sales are ignored, or you see a "not in ECR mode" style error
- The terminal may have dropped out of ECR mode after an update or restart. Call Global Payments (Step 1) to switch it back on.
- Confirm the ECR ID you gave Twine matches the one on the terminal (Step 2).
It worked, then stopped after a router or terminal restart
- The terminal probably picked up a new IP address. Set a DHCP reservation so it keeps the same address, and let Twine know if the IP has changed.
