Setting Up SumUp as a Payment Provider

Take card payments in Twine POS through SumUp — the sale total is sent straight from the till to your SumUp card reader, so nothing is keyed twice and the day's takings reconcile against the till.

You ring up the sale in Twine POS and choose SumUp; the amount appears on the reader ready for the customer to tap, insert, or swipe. On a supported phone you can also take the payment with Tap to Pay, with no separate reader at all.

Time: ~15 minutes  ·  You'll need: a SumUp account, a SumUp card reader (or a phone that supports Tap to Pay), and the device you run Twine POS on.

Warning
If you already use SumUp, make sure the SumUp app is not installed on the device you run Twine POS on. The two compete for the card reader's connection, and payments will fail unpredictably until the app is removed.

Before you start

  • An active SumUp account. If you don't have one yet, Step 1 covers it.
  • A SumUp card reader, charged and to hand — or a phone that supports Tap to Pay if you'd rather go reader-free.
  • Admin access to the Twine back office — the connection is made there.
Note
SumUp readers connect over Bluetooth, which shares the 2.4 GHz band with WiFi. If your venue's WiFi runs on 2.4 GHz, the two can interfere — put your tills and readers on a 5 GHz network where possible.

Step 1 · Get your SumUp account and card reader

If you're new to SumUp, order your reader and open your account through Twine's SumUp page — that keeps your account tied to the Twine partnership from day one. There are two partner rates to choose from, and the page helps you pick the cheaper one for your customers:

Once the reader arrives, activate your SumUp account by following the instructions SumUp sends with it. Make a note of the email address your SumUp account is registered under — you'll sign in with it at the till.

Tip
Already a SumUp customer? You can use your existing account and reader — skip the order and go straight to Step 2.

Step 2 · Connect your SumUp account to Twine

The connection is made in the Twine back office, and takes a minute:

  1. Sign in to the Twine back office and open the Integrations page from the sidebar.
  2. Click the SumUp card.
  3. Click Connect to SumUp. SumUp's own login page opens — sign in with your SumUp credentials from Step 1 and authorise the connection.

Once the page shows Connected, the SumUp payment method is available to your tills. Because the connection lives on your Twine account rather than on the till itself, your devices pick it up automatically the next time they sync — there's nothing to reinstall.

Warning
Twine connects the SumUp account your browser is signed in to. If you have more than one SumUp account, sign out of SumUp first (or use a private window) so you can choose the right one — the account you authorise is where your card payments will settle.

Step 3 · Sign in and pair the card reader

The first SumUp payment you take does the pairing — you don't set the reader up in advance:

  1. Ring up a sale in Twine POS and choose SumUp as the payment method.
  2. The first time only, a SumUp sign-in appears — enter your SumUp account credentials from Step 1.
  3. Make sure the card reader is switched on, then let the till search for nearby readers.
  4. Confirm you're connecting to the right device by checking the last three digits of the serial number shown on screen against the reader itself.
  5. The amount appears on the reader — the customer taps, inserts, or swipes, and the result comes straight back to Twine. The order is marked paid and the receipt prints.

From then on the till remembers the reader, so every later payment skips the sign-in and discovery steps.

Troubleshooting

The till can't find the card reader

  • Check the reader is switched on and charged — it sleeps quickly on low battery.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the till.
  • Remove the SumUp app if it's installed on the same device — it holds the reader's connection and blocks Twine.
  • If the connection is unstable, move the till's WiFi to a 5 GHz network — 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth interfere with each other.

The payment is declined immediately

  • Confirm your SumUp account is fully activated — a half-finished activation accepts sign-in but refuses payments.

The sign-in dialog keeps reappearing

  • The SumUp credentials may have been mistyped, or the account's password changed since pairing. Sign in again with the current credentials.
  • If it persists, sign in once at sumup.me to check the account isn't locked or awaiting verification, then try again at the till.
